Attackers of Jos prison trapped within the facility

The Nigerian Correctional Service reported on Sunday that an attack on a medium-security detention center in Jos occurred, but that the perpetrators were confined within the institution following a gunfight.

In a statement shared with PREMIUM TIMES, the service's spokesperson, Francis Enobore, said the assailants assaulted the institution "in huge numbers with sophisticated weaponry" at around 17:20 hours, engaging security agents in a gun fight.

"Although they got access to the yard, they are locked inside," the statement said, adding that "men from sister security agencies were promptly dispatched to help the armed guards in cordoning off the surrounding wall and the whole area."

"The Service's reaction unit has also been dispatched to the center as reinforcement.

"The situation is currently under control, as superior fire from a coordinated team of security agencies has suppressed the assailants' firepower. "As the incident unfolds, we will provide updates," Mr Enobore said.

Mr Enobore also informed PREMIUM TIMES on Sunday night that further information concerning the jailbreak is still being uncovered.

In July, four detainees escaped from the Jos detention center.

As security officers strive to bring calm to several villages in the North Central state, there has been a rash of assaults.
