Jose Peseiro, a Portuguese coach, has been named Head Coach of the Super Eagles by the Nigeria Football Federation.
The NFF announced this in a statement issued following its National Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.
"The Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, following the end of the relationship with Mr Gernot Rohr, after careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee," the NFF communique read in part.
The Portuguese hire comes 17 days after Gernot Rohr, a Franco-German, was fired as coach of the Super Eagles.
Peseiro will assume complete control of the squad after the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Cameroon next month.
"However, the Committee decided that Mr Augustine Eguavoen, who has been designated temporary Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon, with Mr Peseiro serving simply as an observer." The AFCON, it was generally agreed, is an excellent opportunity for Mr Peseiro to begin working with Mr Eguavoen, who will resume to his post as Technical Director (thus Mr Peseiro's immediate supervisor) after the AFCON," the message continued.
61-year-old Peseiro spent his first eight years as a manager in Portuguese football's third and fourth levels, having started out as a player-coach at his final club. In the summer of 1999, he was named manager of C.D. Nacional, a club he aided win promotion to the Primeira Liga in only three seasons. He guided the squad to a final ranking of 11th in 2002–03.
