Lyon's French Cup match at Paris FC on Friday was called off after half-time for the second time this season due to crowd disturbance.
As the second half was about to begin, the match was halted by events in the fans at the Charlety Stadium in Paris.
Flares were hurled back and forth between home and visiting supporters in one stand during the interval.
Homemade fireworks also went off with a bang.
Spectators ran onto the pitch as security and police rushed towards the stand, preventing the play from being resumed.
The referee and players came out to start the second half but then went back to their locker rooms.
After the involvement of the police and stewards, as well as the stadium announcer's plea for calm, the public returned to the stand ten minutes later.
"In accord with the authorities, the match will not be continued," the stadium announcer said after a brief pause.
Since the start of the season in August, the French season has been marred by fan-related events.
Lyon has already been forced to play two games behind closed doors and has been docked a league point after their home game against Marseille on November 21 was called off after Marseille's Dimitri Payet was struck in the head by a bottle thrown from the stands.
That game has yet to be re-played.
The score was 1-1 between the two teams. Moussa Dembele equalized a minute before half-time after Gaetan Laura had given the hosts an early lead.
