On Sunday, unknown gunmen opened fire on the motorcade of Chinedu Awoh, a politician representing the Ohaukwu North seat in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly.

While on his route to his hometown of Effium, the gunmen attacked and fired at his convoy.

The gunmen opened fire on his convoy as soon as they saw him approaching the Effium village, according to reports.

The lawmaker was then transported to Abakaliki's Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital for treatment after sustaining gunshot wounds.

In the first week of November, gunmen are said to have killed 17 people in the Effium hamlet in Ebonyi State's Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

According to SaharaReporters, the gunmen stormed the hamlet and opened fire on inhabitants, injuring several and killing 17.

Since January 2021, a prolonged communal issue between Ezza-Effium and Effium people in the state's Ohuakwu Local Government Area has resulted in the deaths of innocent people and the damage of property worth millions of naira, according to a source.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who visited the districts over the Easter break, evaluated the extent of the conflict's destruction and assured that the Nigerian government will do all possible to protect the residents' security.
