Early Monday, gunmen dressed in military fatigues opened fire on police officers stationed outside the Abia State Command Headquarters, killing one Inspector Friday Adama.
Adama's death was verified by the state's Police Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Obonna.
"It is said that on the 13th December 2021 at about 0100 hours, gunmen dressed in military camouflage and using a gun truck opened fire on cops on pindown duty in front of 28 Police Mobile Force alongside the State Command Headquarters, Bende Road Umuahia," the PPRO stated.
"The police officers on red alert returned fire, deterring the hoodlums from carrying out their heinous plans and fleeing the scene with gunshot wounds."
He went on to say that Adama died in the gunfight and urged inhabitants of the state and medical facility owners to "give information to the Police or other Security Agencies on anyone discovered or presented with gunshot injuries."
Obonna revealed that the attack was aimed at the Mobile Police Force Base rather than the police headquarters, stating that when they arrived at the MOPOL checkpoint there, one of them in military uniform came down and began firing.
He said that one of the hoodlums was also fatally injured in response.
