An own goal by Mats Hummels sealed a hardfought 1-0 win for world champions France against Germany, in their Group F Euro 2020 opening game inside the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.
The defeat means Germany have now lost their opening fixture at the European Championship for the first time after a record 12-game unbeaten run.
France broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when midfielder Paul Pogba’s superb raking pass was fired back across the goal by Lucas Hernandez and Hummels slotted the ball into his own net as he tried to clear.
France’s Adrien Rabiot struck the outside of the post early in the second half and Kylian Mbappe had a superb finish ruled out for offside.
And with five minutes left in the game Karim Benzema thought he had wrapped up the game, after slamming Mbappe’s cross into the back of the net but it was also disallowed for offside.
Up next for Germany is a tough tie against Portugal on Saturday, 19 June while France will take on Hungary in Budapest.
Portugal top the group and are followed by France while Germany and Hungary are third and fourth respectively.
