Yomi Alliyu, the lawyer for Yoruba activist Sunday Adeyemi (Igboho), has declared that it is the Nigerian government, not the Benin Republic government, that is holding Igboho in prison.
Despite the fact that Igboho has been jailed in the Benin Republic for months, his lawyer claims that the Nigerian government is behind his continuing detention.

Sunday Igboho Alliyu also shot off rumors of a plot to assassinate the activist.
The lawyer advised individuals "flying the kite" to stop spreading such rumors in an interview with Vanguard, guaranteeing that Igboho will recover their freedom shortly.
"I'm not aware of any threat to his life," he added. I talk to his wife on a regular basis, but I'm not aware of any intentions to get rid of him." We have urged his guys and Yoruba youngsters to refrain from enforcing regulations. We warned them not to act like IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra) because if they began killing and burning, they would be killing their own relatives. We asked them to be calm; but, if somebody is flying such a kite in order to understand what would happen if Sunday Igboho is slain in prison, I tell them to reconsider. Except for the government's foes, I don't believe anyone is planning something similar. The only way for this administration to wash its hands of this heinous plan is for Sunday Igboho to be released right now because it is them (FG) who are keeping him in prison, not the Benin Republic government. We will hold the Federal Government accountable if anything happens to Sunday Igboho. That is why we have urged Yoruba youths not to take laws into their own hands, as we are confident that Sunday Igboho would be set free and that the claimed plot to assassinate him is nothing more than a rumor.I don't think he's in any danger."
During a podcast on Tuesday, Olayomi Koiki, an Igboho spokeswoman, said that President Patrice Talon of the Benin Republic was working with the Federal Government to extradite Igboho to Nigeria.
"In the previous 24/48 hours, many people have heard rumors.," he remarked. "We know that God Almighty is keeping an eye on us." They will not be successful if they are attempting. If they are plotting evil against Prof. Banji Akintoye and others, they are merely attempting to do so; but, God's power is greater (Igboho). Their objective is to kill him in order to suppress the Yoruba Nation's agenda, but God has demonstrated that he is greater than they are."
