President Muhammadu Buhari's human rights record has been slashed by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD-West Africa) over the alleged deaths of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, and the 2020 #EndSARS demonstrators.

Idayat Hassan, the CDD's Executive Director, revealed this in Abuja on Monday during the official launch of "Democracy Watch Reports."

She said that civil and political rights have worsened in the last five years under Buhari's and his predecessors' regimes.

"Some of the measures in the campaign against graft in our nation have been reactionary rather than preventative," Idayat added. But, as part of our findings and analysis, particularly on the topic of human rights, we have observed a degradation of human rights, which is the foundation of democracy, over the last 22 years.

"Over the previous 22 years, we've seen severe human rights breaches, including extrajudicial murders, from one administration to the next." For example, the Odi Massacre in Zaki Biam occurred during the government of Olusegun Obasanjo.

"We have the death of a Boko Haram commander under the Yar'Adua government, and the most recent one is the killing of IMN, IPOB, and EndSARS demonstrators." As a result, each administration has seen a decline."

Political interference in corruption investigations and prosecutions was also cited as a serious impediment in the country's battle against corruption, according to the study.

To establish accountability and build public confidence, the center recommends that politicians be forced to publicly identify their sources of income.

The Presidency and the National Assembly, according to the center, must increase their oversight over ministries, departments, and agencies and work to strengthen their legal and administrative mandates.
