Heavy fighting in Afghanistan’s city of Kunduz is continuing after the U.S. government has launched an attack on Taliban major positions. According to the Afghan spy agency, the attackers even managed to kill the Taliban leader and his deputy.
On Monday Taliban fighters seized the provincial capital of Kunduz—it became their first major victory since 2001. On Tuesday two airstrikes, carried out by the U.S. warplanes, halted an attempt by Taliban fighters to seize the Kunduz airport. It happened after Afghan forces’ counterattack to retake the strategic city failed: hundreds of civilians and soldiers retreated to the local airport, where insurgent forces surrounded them. Government ground troops were just unable to move closer than a mile toward their aim.
