The meeting between President Xi Jinping and the Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou, which kicks off on Saturday afternoon in Singapore, has been hailed by both sides as a “milestone” of the cross-Strait relationship.
For this historic event to take place, great effort had been put into ensuring that every detail of the arrangement is in accordance with the “One-China Principle”, according to Chinese Mainland’s Taiwan Affairs Office.
The principle, specifying that both sides recognize that there is only one China and both Chinese Mainland and Taiwan belong to one China, is the spirit of the 1992 Consensus which was reached in the title year.
The Consensus, together with the One-China Principle, has become the bed stone on which all the advancements in cross-Strait relations have been made ever since. #XiJinping #XiMa
